Waterloo, ON – Dodgeball Canada, Dodgeball Ontario and Explore Waterloo Region are pleased to announce that the first ever Canadian Mixed Open Dodgeball Championships will be held in Waterloo, ON June 10-11, 2023.

Dodgeball is an ideal mix of team strategy and individual performance, making it one of the youngest and most engaging sports globally. In Canada, dodgeball is a young sport that has grown quickly with the country’s first National Championship taking place in 2016. This team sport is played with a variety of interpretations of the core rules as well as different forms of balls. The 2023 Canadian Mixed Dodgeball Championship format will be foam-style dodgeball and will feature both intermediate and competitive divisions.

“Part of our focus has been to bring exciting new sporting events to Waterloo Region,” says Allister Scorgie, Director of Sport Hosting at Explore Waterloo Region. “Dodgeball has seen tremendous growth across the country and around the world, and the opportunity to work with Dodgeball Ontario is very exciting for us. We can’t wait to see their best athletes here in Waterloo Region and we believe the 2023 Mixed Open will help to further develop the sport locally.”

Dodgeball’s popularity continues to surge around the world which results in greater competition, and the skillsets become more refined year after year with more teams fighting for a podium finish.

In the summer of 2022, Canada hosted the World Dodgeball Championships in Edmonton, Alberta, which included the Mixed division for the first time. Canada’s Mixed Foam team claimed gold in the first ever showing of the Mixed division.

“We are excited to build on the momentum of Canada’s gold medal performance at the World Championships by adding another high-performance event to showcase the sport of dodgeball,” says Bianca Segatto, President of Dodgeball Ontario. “The Canadian Mixed Open Championships in Waterloo will be the first event of its kind in Canada using the official format of mixed dodgeball.”

More information on the sport of Dodgeball as well as tournament updates can be found on the Dodgeball Ontario website.
