TORONTO, Feb. 13, 2018 /CNW/ – Tijana Martin is the winner of the 2018 Tom Hanson Photojournalism Award, presented by The Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF) and The Canadian Press.
Martin, a reporter/photographer at the Lethbridge Herald in Alberta, will join The Canadian Press head office in Toronto for a six-week internship this summer. The experience will allow Martin to perform on the national stage, covering news, sports and cultural events. View her winning submission.
“The jury was really impressed with Tijana’s portfolio,” says Graeme Roy, director of photography with The Canadian Press and chair of the jury. “It showed a strong desire to tell stories and went well beyond the confines of daily assignment work in a smaller market. It showed a photographer working really hard to make images that told great stories.
“Her passion to continue to grow as a photographer was put forward in a very compelling submission, and it spoke directly to a core idea of the Tom Hanson Photojournalism Award — to offer a hand up to a deserving photographer to perform on the national stage. We’re so happy to have Tijana join us and can’t wait to see what she does.”
The annual award attracts submissions from students and early-career photojournalists from across the country.
Martin will be formally presented with the award at the CJF Awards on June 14, 2018 at the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto.

About the Tom Hanson Photojournalism Award
The Canadian Journalism Foundation and The Canadian Press teamed up in 2009 to launch a new photojournalism award in memory of Tom Hanson, an award-winning photographer who travelled around the world and across the country, shooting some of the most iconic news and sports images of his time. The Tom Hanson Photojournalism Award offers a six-week paid internship at The Canadian Press head office in Toronto for a photojournalist in the early stages of his or her career.
