One of the most compelling reasons to watch films is their ability to transport us, challenge our perceptions, and expand our understanding of the world. Luis Ortega’s Kill the Jockey excels and invites the audience (that is me in this case) to explore new perspectives.
A standout dialogue for me in the film is: “What use is God’s blessing, if on our life journey we end up losing our minds?” This quote perfectly depicts the essence of the story, centered around Remo, a brilliant but troubled jockey portrayed by the exceptionally talented Nahuel Pérez Biscayart. Each character in the film is meticulously crafted, thanks great direction of Luis Ortega.
From the very first frame, the film surprises and engages, prompting questions, “What did I just see?”—and it does so in an incredibly positive way. The mark of a great film is its ability to provoke thought long after you’ve left the cinema. In a memorable dialogue between Remo and Abril (played by Úrsula Corberó). When Remo asks, “When will you love me again?” Abril’s response, “You have to die and be reborn,” serves as a great climax, which already made me think that I should watch Kill the Jockey again.
I walked into Kill the jockey with zero expectations and trust me it is a must-watch for anyone interested in experiencing cinema from a fresh perspective. The screenplay, crafted by Luis Ortega, Rodolfo Palacios, and Fabián Casas, is exceptional, with each character shining brightly. The film’s sound design, by Guido Berenblum, Javier Umpiérrez, and Claus Lynge, further enhances the overall experience.
Kill the Jockey is something that is fantastical, legendary, or existing only in the realm of imagination. The movie conveys a sense of enchantment, depicts scences that are extraordinary or beyond the ordinary realm of reality. Yes go and watch as it will take you on an adventurous, mythical, and magical journey.
