The Lost Bus, a gripping docudrama directed by Paul Greengrass based on real-life events from the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California history.
The film follows a determined bus driver, Kevin McKay (played by Matthew McConaughey), and a dedicated school teacher, Mary Ludwig (played by America Ferrera), as they fight against time and chaos to save 22 schoolchildren. Blending real events with dramatized storytelling, the movie focuses on human courage in the face of overwhelming disaster.
Set during the catastrophic wildfire that destroyed the communities of Paradise, Magalia, and Concow, the story captures how quickly the fire spread – faster than authorities anticipated. Nearly entire towns were displaced, and the fire chief ultimately made a decision to shift all efforts from stopping the blaze to simply saving lives. This sense of helplessness is at the heart of the film and makes the danger feel painfully real.

Matthew McConaughey delivers an amazing performance, carrying much of the film through subtle expressions and raw emotion. Every struggle is written on his face, making the experience deeply nerve-wracking to watch. Knowing that his real-life son plays his on-screen son adds another emotional layer to his performance. America Ferrera is equally strong, portraying a teacher with a believable balance of softness and strict responsibility as she protects the children under her care.
The film is undeniably stressful, as you’d expect from a real-life wildfire thriller. While there are moments of clunky family drama, the core of the movie remains focused on heroism and survival.
Screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, The Lost Bus stands out as a visceral and emotionally heavy experience. Produced by Gregory Goodman, Jason Blum, Jamie Lee Curtis, and others, and distributed by Apple Original Films, the movie will be released in cinemas on 19 September and stream on Apple TV+ starting 3 October. It’s a stressful, nerve-wrecking watch – but also a powerful tribute to ordinary people who became heroes when it mattered most.
