Tarik Saleh’s Eagles of the Republic to Premiere at TIFF
Acclaimed filmmaker Tarik Saleh returns with Eagles of the Republic, premiering in North America as part of TIFF’s Centrepiece programme. The film, which is Sweden’s official International Feature Academy Award submission, stars Fares Fares (Chernobyl, The Nile Hilton Incident), Amr Waked, Cherien Dabis, Zineb Triki, and Lyna Khoudri.
Set in Cairo, the story follows Egypt’s most beloved actor, George Fahmy, who is forced to take part in a state-commissioned propaganda film. Drawn deeper into the corridors of power and into a forbidden affair, Fahmy’s life spirals into dangerous territory.
Eagles of the Republic is the final chapter in Saleh’s Cairo trilogy, following the award-winning The Nile Hilton Incident (2017) and Cairo Conspiracy (2022). Known for blending political intrigue with noir storytelling, Saleh describes the film as “about truth and lies,” with characters embodying deception and integrity in a volatile setting.
