Cambridge, ON, October 2, 2020: Originally Rhythm and Brews was started as a contract brewery out of Toronto by full time fire fighter and part time entrepreneur Andrew Byer in 2018. However Andrew plans quickly turned the local drinking hole into a full time home brewery. With his passion for great beer and good music, he has prided himself in creating a space where both beer and music come together as one.
As an avid home brewer along with multiple certifications from the Beer Judge Certification program (BJCP) his love for beer evolved into brewing professionally. His passion for brewing ignited the fire that led him to start his own company, “I figured nothing goes better with beer than music and we evolved from a ‘napkin’ idea into reality” he says. Today, Rhythm and Brews serves about 12 beers on tap, as well as ciders, wines and mixed drinks. There is also a special fall season brew —featuring ‘Charlie’s Pumpkin Patch’ spiced Irish Stout.
Rhythm and brews aims to support and grow the local -live music scene by contracting and promoting local talent as well. Both beverage and live music products are ever-changing “We make sure that we pay the local talent fairly in addition to promoting them with our marketing capabilities all while brewing the best beer we can.”
The company is also committed to giving back and bettering their community with latest contribution of 1800 meals to the Waterloo Food Bank. An important part of the business vision as Andrew states, “We pride ourselves on inclusivity and welcome our business establishment to people from diverse backgrounds.”
Andrew goes on to add that being a first time entrepreneur is definitely a challenge, “Rhythm & Brews is my first business, and in hindsight I had underestimated the challenges and commitment it would demand”. He contributes at least 100 hours weekly to both his careers combined but says it’s not the hours that are the challenge, but rather the short and long-term challenges; specifically, financial management and growth. “Money spent is money first to be made, and being a small business, balancing growth and sustainability is key.”
Andrew still performs the brewing and brews house requirements while his Fiancé Monica, acts as the General Manager. “We take no income, and when staff calls in sick, we step in” Andrew says. For upcoming entrepreneurs, Andrews’s advice is, “Treat your company as your newborn, because it will require all your attention. As a entrepreneur you should be aware of the all the responsibilities that come with it as life was a lot easier before starting Rhythm and Brews, but it was also a lot less fulfilling”.
Starting October 1st 2020, event tickets will be sold online or in the taproom that will include a reserved seat and 1 pint. Patrons can purchase tickets at https://rhythmandbrews.ca/.
