Honam Naturals started of necessity when Naana Daniels experienced a severe third-degree burn while on vacation. With lupus and Scleroderma, there were no options on the market that were both affordable and safe for her susceptible skin. Today, Honam Naturals has been operating for four years and has expanded into a social cause.
A bit of background…
The business started accidentally when Naana Daniels took a trip to Ghana and got a third-degree burn. After going to the doctor, she was prescribed steroids which were not the best option for Daniels as she was already on other medications. When expensive store-bought products failed, she decided to take matters into her own hands.
She made a lightweight cream that helped heal her burns using oils and shea butter. The treatment worked so effectively her friends believed she had received a chemical peel. After making a few batches for friends and family, she launched her products. Selling out on the first night of her launch, Honam Naturals was born.
Inspired by Ghanaian Skincare
Immigrating from Ghana to Canada in her twenties, she’s always been fascinated with the skincare regime of the Ghana natives. Without using expensive products or sunscreen and living in a scorching climate, they had perfect skin without wrinkles. Daniels learned that shea butter, heavily produced in Ghana, was used for cooking and on their skin.
Incorporating this idea with products available in Canada, Daniels created her safe line for everyone. This includes individuals dealing with sensitive skin, acne, rosacea, eczema, and aging.
More Than Just a Product
In the beginning, the product was made to help Daniels, but over time the mission of her business has transformed into more of a social cause. Dealing with the effects of Lupus and Scleroderma, Daniels has become a contact for those recently diagnosed with Scleroderma so she can give advice and help them with their condition. Daniels is also deeply passionate about consulting with customers to recommend products, monitor progress, and ensure success. She also hopes to bring her clean and natural products to stores such as Whole Foods and Healthy Planet to bring more accessibility to consumers.
Giving Back to Ghana and Canada
Aside from creating new products and expanding, Daniels is also passionate about volunteer work in Ghana and Canada. This includes giving back to the women in Ghana who have been producing body butter for years and donating products to women’s shelters and outreach programs for the homeless.
Daniels also donated a portion of all sales to the Lupus Foundation during Lupus Awareness Month. She is also currently organizing a program for women and children refugees in Ghana to educate and empower them to help support their families.
On top of all of this, Daniels is also passionate about helping friends and family start their businesses and consults these new entrepreneurs to help make the transition easier.
